Day in the Life

“Day in the Life” is an optional, behind-the-scenes visit to companies and organizations in the arts, entertainment and media industries, presented as part of the 2010 UB Coast to Coast New York City Symposium on Friday, July 23, in the afternoon.

During registration you will be prompted to select your choices in order of preference.

New York Times/United Nations/ NYCity News Service/ CUNY J-School

You’ll start with a tour of CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, where you’ll get a chance to meet recent graduates of the program who are working in journalism jobs in New York City. Afterward Jere Hester who runs NYCity News Service, a multimedia, Web-based wire service that makes student stories about New York neighborhoods available to news organizations around the world, will discuss CUNY’s hyperlocal activities in partnership with The New York Times. Next, you’ll visit the The New York Times, located next door to CUNY, where you’ll meet photo editor, Jim Estrin. Then you’ll head back to CUNY for lunch.  The last stop on this Day in the Life visit is at the United Nations, where you’ll learn about their news operation. 

Roundabout Theatre Company

New York’s leading not-for-profit theatre. Winner of 25 Tony Awards, 35 Drama Desk Awards and 42 Outer Critics Circle Awards.  In this limited admission Day in the Life visit, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at several different facets of theater, including business, marketing, ticket services, development (fundraising) and general management components. Afterward you’ll receive an indepth tour of the American Airlines Theater. This Day in the Life opportunity will broaden your understanding of available careers in theatre beyond just acting and design.

Silvercup Studios is New York City’s largest full-service film and television production facility, known for producing such shows as “30 Rock,” “Gossip Girl,” Sex and the City” and “The Sopranos.”

Theatre Development Fund

There is an exciting opportunity to meet with Senior Staff at the Theatre Development Fund, the nation’s largest not for profit performing arts service organization, and tour both their incredible Costume Collection (over 80,000 costumes available at low cost to not for profits across the country), as well as their Times Square TKTS discount tickets booth. TDF works tirelessly to build the next generation of audience members for theatre and dance through programs and services that promote education, conversation, and access.   TDF’s most familiar programs are its TKTS discount ticket centers and its membership program, serving over 80,000 New Yorkers annually.
