The New York Times has called him, “the most natural comedian working today.”  Grammy nominated comedian Bobby Collins has starred in his own Showtime specials, was Rosie O’Donnell’s predecessor, has hosted VH1′s “Stand-Up Spotlight,” and has opened for Cher, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias and Tony Bennett – among many others. He’s been nominated for a CableACE award as well the American Comedy Awards “Stand-Up Comic of the Year.” Collins has also appeared in five feature films and numerous television shows.

He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo in 1973.  Bobby Collins will be leading a workshop in Stand Up Comedy at UBC2C Hollywood.

1. What was the last project you added to your resume? I’m the most played Comic on XM & Sirius Radio- I don’t personally subscribe to pay radio but from the audiences of late – they do and they’ll learn!

2. What was your first job in the industry? I left a job in the Garment Center working for Calvin Klein and went on the first job performing Stand-up Comedy at a well known establishment called Garvins in Washington DC – - the owner told me the second night to headline and the headliner opened for me!  It was gratifying but not a way to make friends!

3. Who were your mentors? I loved watching the crazy antic’s of Flip Wilson and Red Shelton- but also enjoyed the cerebral comedy of Lenny Bruce and Slappy White – the goal to entertain and educate.  Let the people leave feeling better than when they arrived.

4.  What did you study while a student at UB? No major.  They called it Liberal Arts.  To all the gifted people who did not have a clue what they were to pursue in life, but just knew what there was was not for them – I applaud them!  Destiny rears its head.  Follow ones heart! Paint different colors with you as the brush .

5. What’s your favorite memory of UB? The heart of the city was my greatest memory.  Surely not the cold, but the realness of its people, I still carry in my heart today.

6.  If you could go back to UB now as a student what course would you take? I would take courses in acting, as well as some Law.  It’s good to know the parameters in life and how far you can take them both legally and emotionally.  There is a balance.  Hey, I’ve learned some things.  I paid my ticket in this business.

7.  What’s the last book you read?Comedy At The Edge: How stand-up in the 1970′s changed America,” by Richard Zoglin

8.  What would you be doing if you weren’t working in the entertainment industry? I probably would be designing men’s clothing, especially shirts.  The gene pool could use some chlorine.  Men need guidance, and not from people who they would not hang-out with, or from their wives who see men’s fashions from a different angle.

9.  What was the smartest career decision you ever made? To pursue my dream of being a Stand-Up Comedian.  I thank God everyday and never look back – just forward to another adventure – it’s truly the journey……..

10.  What would you still like to accomplish career-wise? I’ve been criticized for not being at different events or cow towing up to certain industry people, or going to this party and that – to further my career. I feel that where I’m at right now is where I should be.

11. Can you offer any advice for people breaking into the industry? Follow your dreams, work hard have your priorities in order.  God first – family second and your career third – one ahead of the other – you know – you have to get back on where you got off . Have the faith in knowing and trusting yourself …….. the rest is fun and remember non of us are getting out of this life alive – don’t take it so serious
